The buckler became popular around the late medieval period and early renaissance as an easy-to-carry partner to an arming sword or rapier. It allows the off-hand to be useful for deflecting blows and protecting the sword hand, allowing for more aggressive guard positions, hands outstretched toward the opponent. They are used today in HEMA as well as SCA and other reenactment groups.
This buckler is made from modern high-quality 1/2" plywood, and features a tough 14 gauge shield boss. This shield measures 12" in diameter.
